As the political smoke cleared from yesterday’s defection drama the spoils of war definitely went to Nigel!

IN THE calamitous political piss-up that ended with Tory Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick being fired by one political boss only to be hired by another a couple of hours later there was only one winner.

It sounds like a complete cockup with Jenrick, or someone in his team, leaving his resignation speech kicking around the office. Or maybe that was the plan all along?

It doesn’t really matter if it was a cockup or a conspiracy. Kemi only had one option and that was to fire Jenrick immediately. They say she came out looking like a tough leader, but what else could she have done?

She also said that seeing the back of Jenrick meant the Tories were rid of a big problem. What a load of rubbish! If Kemi thinks he was a problem inside the Tory tent, now that he’s gone rouge, he’s going to be an even bigger pain in the arse for his former boss.

The Tory leader also said that there will be no more defections. Again, who believes that? I can’t imagine even Kemi can imagine three more years without more of her rag-tag bunch going over the wall!

There was definitely only one winner no matter what spin those involved chose to put on events and that was Nigel and Reform UK. It’s my guess that the plan was for Jenrick to jump ship on the eve of the May local elections so as to do the most damage to his former party, but whatever he was plotting the result is the same. Reform UK have trousered the win and the Tories’ have taken yet another hit to their battered reputation.

What I see is a rising star strategically stripping away anything of value from a once great political powerhouse as it slowly fades into obscurity and irrelevance.

As a footnote I can’t help making the comparison between this political drama and the rise of WeFix London as we also pull in the best people from a similarly once great powerhouse (of the plumbing and home services industry). Just like Reform, WeFix has a few more targets to acquire as customers move their allegiances to the new kid on the block that’s giving them what they want.
