Our recruitment team are trained to be good judges of character, but just to be sure all WEFIX staff are DBS checked before they are allowed to pull on a company uniform. Speaking of the quality and integrity of workers we are very aware that some firms in our industry have gained a reputation for indulging in all manner of sharp practice and overcharging. Some of the dishonest and fraudulent incidents we have been made aware of include:
  • One company has been known to charge a customer £50,000 for work, £20k of which fraudulently found its way into the engineer’s personal account.
  • The same company also charged a customer £3,000 for a one hour roof job.
  • In another case a cash deposit was fraudulently taken for a bathroom installation but work was never started, leaving the customer no choice but to go to the police.
  • Another common ploy amongst cowboy firms is to hide overcharging by not giving a breakdown of labour and materials used on a job.
  • Worst still and on the rise is scam where engineers provide fake or inflated invoices for materials or third party services such as scaffolding, leaving customers paying way over the odds.
  • And we are also aware of situations where a company uses a franchise model, which can compromise customer security when the job gets further outsourced to illegal or unqualified labour who have no DBS clearance.
By contrast WEFIX have a completely transparent pricing system, irrespective of whether a job is done on an hourly of fixed rate. Labour and materials are always itemised, and cash deposits are never taken.
