1979

The Birth of the Mullins Family Plumbing Dynasty

Mullins family patriarch Charlie laid the foundations of the family plumbing empire in the early 1970s, becoming self-employed as soon as he completed his apprenticeship, before founding an iconic London plumbing and home services brand from a basement office in 1979, that would eventually sell for £150 million in 2021.

1990's

Redefining an Industry’s Image from Cowboy to Corporate

By the 1990s Mullins’ corporate image vision was well established – uniforms, smart vans, real 24/7 service, and transparent pricing.

The revolutionary model would soon grow into a firm of 400+ based in a 30,000 square-foot HQ, 24/7 control centre, staff gym, restaurant, and an in-house apprentice training centre, opened by mayor of London, Boris Johnson (2008).

2000's

Plumbing Hits the Nation’s TV Screens & Apprenticeships Get Political

The new decade saw the birth of the ‘celebrity plumbers’ with famous customers; television shows like Secret Millionaire and Posh Plumbers, and engineers earning 6-figure salaries as the public abandon DIY for quality work and premier service.
Buster Martin was a mere lad of 98 when he joined the team as a van washer in 2004 to become a media star and public favourite, as the UK’s oldest working man and star of the 2008 London Marathon, aged 101.
By decade end the UK’s skills gap is a hot political issue and celebrity plumber Mullins and Co become the voice of apprenticeships, lobbying ministers in Whitehall and leading the call for more funding and greater appreciation for vocational training.

2010's

‘Bog Standard Business’ Bestseller & the Ultimate Call-out

Forget wannabee plumber Michael Caine 2015’s ‘Bog Standard Business – How I Took the Plunge and Became the Millionaire Plumber’ became plumbing’s first autobiography charting the rise of a south London lad from council estate to Royal Palace.
Thomas Crapper may have had a Royal Warrant for his khazi design but he never got the ultimate call-out to Buckingham Palace to be awarded an OBE for Services to Plumbing as also happened in 2015.

2020's

The Sale and Decline of a Trusted & Cherished Institution, and a Phoenix Rising

In 2021 Pimlico Plumbers (PP) was sold to US private equity who took the iconic brand and sold its soul and reputation as so many franchises. And with the new model came the inevitable decline in standards and service as franchisees run the show, including hiring whoever they want, legal, illegal, qualified or criminal to wear the famous uniform
Handing the keys to 40 plus years of graft was clearly a mistake. The new owners didn’t want the company; the name was all they were after. Rumours of what was happening to the structure of PP were bad enough, but the stream of emails, letters and calls from old customers who were suffering due to the drop standards was far worse.
Less than a year after the sale of PP plans for the launch of WEFIX London – a company that would return the family-run gold-standard to the Home Services industry in London were in motion. The business model was simple:

  • Deliver a superior customer experience in terms of service and expertise
  • All engineers and office staff are CPS checked before joining the company
  • Customer calls will always be answered by WEFIX staff from our 24/7 ops-centre
  • Emergency cover will be available 24-hours per day, including Bank Holidays

WEFIX London came into being in October of 2024 – founded by three generations of the Mullins family – Charlie, son Scott and grandson Ashley and has been growing month on month since then.

Plumbing Hits the Headlines & TV Screens

Buster Joins the Family Firm (2004) to Become the UK’s Oldest Working Man

Buster Martin was a mere lad of 98 when Charlie hired him as a van washer in 2004, but as word spread about the grey-bearded former soldier who, after being demobbed worked at Brixton market pulling the stalls in and out each day. He could also tell one hell of a story, like the time he stole a Spitfire for a bet…
The public loved him and the press couldn’t get enough of the sprightly old chap who became the oldest person to complete the London Marathon in 2008, aged 101.

Female Plumbers Changing Attitudes to Traditional Job Roles

Always looking for new ways to do things better the Mullins plumbing brand took an industry infamous for poor service and sharp practices and took it corporate. Smart uniforms, beautifully turned-out vans, engineers who turned up when they were supposed to, and crucially charged what they were supposed to, not what they thought they could get away with.
The days of the scruffy cowboy tradesman turning up late with their arses hanging out of their trousers were over, even the word ‘tradesman’ had to go as more women turned to traditionally male dominated trades. Popular with single women and older customers female plumbers, heating engineers, electricians and carpenters became an integral part of the brand.
